Seven years part 8
“Anytime,” replied Malon brightly, “after all, I don’t get to other girls much anyway, so it was lots of fun.”
“Um, about that…” Shiek began, a hint of hesitancy in her voice.
Malon laughed lightly.
“Oh, don’t worry Shiek. I don’t really understand why you want everyone to think you’re male, but if you want things that way I can respect it.”
Shiek smiled back.
“Thanks Malon.”
“No problem, but you will have to try and explain it sometime.”
The day was grey, and a mist still clung around the ground. Shiek figured it was around half past nine, as a bit of a shiver ran through her. It was a cool morning, and it did not look like the ominous grey clouds were in any hurry to dissipate. It looked as though Hyrule Plain was about to receive a major drenching, or possibly even the last snowfall of the year. Shiek sniffed; the sent of rain was heavy in the air. Walking quickly down the path from Lon Lon Ranch, she smiled. She loved the rain; loved it feel, loved its smell, loved the sounds of the drops falling on the rock, trees, and waters of Hyrule.
Guess I should run to the Kohria Forest… Draq and I need to talk. Slipping out her harp, Shiek strummed the beginning of the forest minuet. Even as her feet came back to her outside the Forest Temple, Shiek knew something was wrong. Nothing was visibly out of place, but there was an evil tension in the air that was very present. Taking a deep breath of the damp forest air, she looked up to the temple door at the top of the long flight of stairs.
“Who are you?”
Shiek nearly died, but instinct instantly took over. Whirling, she fell into a defensive fighting stance, poised to meet the speaker. It was not what she had expected.
Green eyes smiled up at her, as a young girl of around 12 with short greenish blond hair grinned in front of her. She wore Kohria clothing, and a fairy floated above her head. Shiek was instantly struck by how friendly, vulnerable, and innocent the girl seemed.
“My name is Saria… What’s your name?”
“Uh, Shiek,” she was still a little disconcerted that the girl had avoided her initial detection.
“Very pleased to meet you Shiek. You are from outside the forest aren’t you?”
“How did you know that?” Shiek asked, still feeling the evil air that hung around the courtyard of the temple.
Saria shrugged, smiling knowingly.
“Because you’re not from inside it.”
Shiek might have found this funny under other circumstances, however as it was, the simple observation put her even more at edge. She was still very aware of the dark presence, and was beginning to suspect that the friendly, innocent charm of the girl might be a farce.
Saria skipped a few feet over to the steps leading to the temple.
“I came to check on the temple today. Would you like to join me?”
Shiek shook her head, taking a wary step back.
“N-no… I’m, um, looking for someone…”
“Well, then please excuse me. You’ll find Draq in the village with the other Kohria,” she giggled at Shiek’s shocked look and turned back to the temple, “it was a pleasure meeting you. I hope we will see each other soon!” With that, the girl ran up the steps and into the temple.
The door had barely shut behind the girl when two Kohria wolves rose out of the tall grass in the courtyard. Shiek let out a perturbed sight. Today was not starting any better then yesterday…
Wolves were not overly dangerous foes, but fighting two of anything can be tricky, and Shiek was still a little banged up from her pervious battles. Three fights in as many days can be very taxing. Taking a defensive stance, she quickly evaluated the situation. The wolves were undoubtedly faster then her, but couldn’t climb trees, so escape WAS an option. However, that could end in a long night stuck in a tree, and she was rather busy. It’s just two wolves, Shiek, come’on get a grip…
The first wolf jumped towards her, reared back, and struck out with a dual slash. Shiek jumped back, ducking the first blow and dodging the second. Leaping in, she delivered two quick jabs followed by a hook. Squealing, the wolf fell back to huddle by its companion. Pressing her advantage, Shiek jumped closer and kicked hard, connecting with the wolf’s jaw. It let out a howl of pain and jumped back into the brush, clearly done for the day. Shiek hopped back a bit and readied herself for the second wolf.
Hunching back and rearing on its hind legs, the wolf snarled viciously. Bounding up it slashed out at her, growling with rage as it struck. Shiek trapped the hand-like paw and redirected the force of the blow. The Wolf stumbled off-balance, and Shiek gave it a powerful kick to the head before it had time to recover. The wolf staggered once in an attempt to rise, and then fell down for good.
It was at that moment that someone ran into the clearing.
Shiek yelled a war-cry as she spun to face the new arrival. When she saw it was Draq she felt slightly foolish. Draq was breathing hard, and it looked as though he hadn’t stopped running all the way through the Lost Wood to the Temple. His axe was held at the ‘ready-to-kick-tail’ position, waist high and poised to strike. He lowered it slightly when he recognized Shiek, but didn’t pause for pleasantries.
“Did you see Saria come through here?”
“Draq! I’ve been looking for you-”
“Did you see her?” the icy eyes flashed impatiently as he cut her off. Shiek was taken aback, but decided to go with the obviously agitated warrior.
“If she’s that little blond girl, then yes… She went into the temple.”
“And you LET HER GO! Damn it Shiek, she’s a CHILD!”
Draq lunged past her towards the temple door, roughly bumping her out of the way. Shiek stumbled back a few paces, gasping with surprise. Hurt and angry, she bit down on her lower lip in frustration. Without thinking she lashed out verbally at Draq’s back.
“I had a long talk with Malon today, and you know what, she deserves a lot better then you.”
Draq glared back at her over his shoulder from the foot of the stairs. Hurt was plain in his eyes, and Shiek suddenly realized that she had just confirmed something he already believed. Stretching a hand out, Shiek took a step closer.
“No, Draq, sorry, I- I didn’t mean it at all…”
“Well, you should have; it is true after all.”
“Draq, I-” she froze as she felt icy fingers pierce her mind. The evil presence she had been sensing was nigh, and it was much, much, more evil then she had though at first.
“DRAQ! LOOK OUT!” she screamed throwing herself prone.
